Itinerary 1: Take a Walk on the Wild Side

Morning @ Ngong Ping Trail and Ngong Ping Village

Some 5.6 km long, Ngong Ping Trail connects Tung Chung with Ngong Ping Village. Originally created for the construction and maintenance of the Ngong Ping 360 cable car, the path is now a beautiful way of enjoying Lantau Island’s lush green landscape. To reduce its impact on the environment, the path is built on a raised wooden frame, giving it a charming rustic vibe. Just be careful of the gaps between some of the steps! The entire walk takes about three hours, of which the highest point is Nei Lak Shan at 751 metres above sea level. After lots of fresh air and mountain scenery, you can treat yourself to a tasty lunch in Ngong Ping Village!

  • Transportation: Take the MTR to Tung Chung Station, Exit B, then take the No. 38 bus for about 10 minutes

Afternoon @ The Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery

A tasty alternative to lunch at Ngong Ping Village is the traditional vegetarian lunch served every day at Po Lin Monastery. After leaving the monastery, the Big Buddha is simply unmissable. During your visit, you’ll hear a bell ring every seven minutes. It rings 108 times every day, symbolising release from 108 kinds of human frustrations. The 26.4-metre-high Buddha is the world’s largest outdoor bronze seated Buddha. The body consists of 202 individual bronze pieces, while some 2 kg of gold gives the face a beatific radiance. The Buddha’s right hand is raised, representing the removal of affliction, while the left hand rests open on his lap in a gesture of generosity. Climb the 268 steps to the top for a closer look at this massive statue, as well as to enjoy beautiful views of mountains and sea. Pilgrims won’t want to miss the Buddha relic in the Hall of Remembrance.
Transportation: You can walk from Ngong Ping Village in about five minutes

Night @ Ngong Ping 360 and Citygate Outlets

As the sun begins to set, return to Tung Chung on board the Ngong Ping 360. You’ll find that the views from the cable car are even more beautiful at this time of day! If possible, try the Crystal Cabin, which features a glass floor for a truly bird’s eye experience! About 25 minutes later, you’ll be at Citygate Outlets, which is the only shopping mall in Hong Kong with over 90 international brands like Burberry, Michael Kors, Polo Ralph Lauren and Samsonite offering year-round discounts of 30% to 70%. A wonderful destination for dining, shopping and entertainment!
