One sure sign Christmas is over are the forlorn trees that line the streets, stripped of lights and ornaments.
Here are the rules for getting rid of your tree in several local towns.
Residents may dispose of their Christmas trees until the end of January by taking them to the designated area at Herrick Park. Trees are not collected with the trash.
Trees will be collected for the first two weeks of the year. Residents should place trees curbside, at least five feet from the city rubbish barrel as well as five feet between other barrels if there is more than one curbside by 6:00 a.m. on the regular rubbish collection day. Click here for more information.
Christmas trees can be brought to the former Town Transfer Station, 1286 Waterbury Rd. on Saturday, January 9, between 7:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Only trees will be accepted and proof of Cheshire residency is required. There is no charge.
The Town does not provide curbside collection of Christmas trees, but the Cheshire Marching Ram Band offers that service as a fundraiser. Click here for more information.
Christmas trees will be collected through Friday January 8, weather permitting. Collection of the trees will generally be on the same day as trash collection. Should the curbside collection fall behind schedule due to snow or unforeseen circumstances, residents are asked to leave trees at the curb instead of removing them and putting them out again the following week. Trees must be removed from plastic bags and be free of any decorations.
Residents are also encouraged to bring their Christmas trees to the transfer station on Ecology Drive for disposal. Residents are not required to have a bulky waste permit to dispose of Christmas trees. Normal transfer station hours are 7:15 a.m. to Noon and 12:30 to 2:45 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Friday and from 8:00 AM to 1:45 PM on the first and third Saturdays of the month, holidays excluded.
Residents may call 291-7363 with questions. Click here for more information.
Christmas trees will be collected curbside through January 16, weather permitting.
The trees will NOT be picked up by the refuse or recycling trucks but will be collected by a separate vehicle. Place trees at least 5 feet away from refuse and recycling containers. All decorations, including tinsel, must be removed from trees because the trees are recyclable and will be chipped. In addition, trees are not to be put in plastic bags.
Christmas trees can also be disposed of at the Transfer Station during the month of January. There will be a designated area for trees and a permit & punchcard are not required for Christmas tree disposal.
Collection starts January 4th.
Residents in the Monday and Tuesday refuse collection areas should have their trees at the curb by 6 am.
Residents can put out trees as soon as possible, as the DPW may get ahead of schedule. The Town will go the town twice and we may get ahead of schedule, weather permitting. The collection will end on Friday, January 15, 2016. Click here for more information.
Collection starts January 4th and continue during the month of January. Residents are asked not to place trees in the roadway, remove all decorations and tree stands and do not place on the curb if a snowstorm is expected the following day.
